Short-term visitors increase

August saw 2.7 per cent more people visiting Australia than July, recent data has shown.

The number of people visiting Australia on a short-term basis in August increased by 2.7 per cent compared to the figure recorded in July, a report has shown.

Figures from the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) reveal that 484,200 people visited the country in July, which rose to 497,500 in August.

This follows an increase of 1.2 per cent from June to July and 2.5 per cent from May to June, the figures show.

Originally, the ABS had estimated that 453,400 short-term visitors would arrive in Australia in August, so the actual figure exceeded this by 44,100, or 9.7 per cent.

In terms of short-term departures, 1.2 per cent fewer people left Australia during August than in July.

At the end of last month, the ABS published a report that indicated the country's population had increased by 1.8 per cent from the end of March 2009 to the end of the first quarter of this year
