A big part of me hears the echo’s of Hitler making his move on Austria and Czechoslovakia in 1938 which ominously turned into World War II, so I hope with all my heart that world leaders research the history books and don’t make the same mistake of just watching for too long, and instead are early to step in with strong and clear intent to say enough is enough.
As I write this newsletter, it is day 3 of the official incursion into Ukraine and it does appear that they have started the first line of pressure with banking lock outs and economic sanctions on businesses and President Putin & Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov. This is unlikely to be enough, so they need to move quickly and do whatever it takes to get Russia to retreat and end hostilities.
Edmond Burkes quote is ever more succinct today as ever “All that is required for evil to triumph is for good men to do nothing”. Now is the time to show aggressors we have evolved past hostilities and can remain in a world of general peace through sovereignty.
I am reminded that when Iraq first invaded Kuwait in August 1990, a similar path was followed with quick economic sanctions, however it took almost 4 months before the military option was mobilized. For those unfortunately stuck in the middle of a serious and increasing war zone, I hope that help or resolution comes much quicker this time.
For all of us, we need to watch closely at the goings on and prey that we are not following history down a dark and dangerous road.
