Room occupancy rates increased

There was an increase in the last quarter of 2010 in the number of rooms available in Australian tourist accommodation venues, figures have shown.

Room occupancy rates at Australian tourist accommodation increased in the September quarter of 2010, suggesting that more people are visiting the country.

Figures from the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) show that, in seasonally adjusted terms, room occupancy rate in this type of Australian property was 64 per cent in the June quarter of 2010, rising to 64.7 per cent over the following three months.

The 64.7 per cent recorded in the September quarter is 2.7 per cent higher than the rate witnessed in the same three months of 2009.

In terms of the amount of money made at tourist accommodation venues, the turnover for the June quarter was $2,008,200 (£1,290,364), which rose by 1.7 per cent to $2,041,700 in the following quarter.

This was also an increase of 8.3 per cent on the money made in the last quarter of 2009.

However, figures last month from the ABS showed that fewer people visited Australia in October than did in September.
