Renewable energy scheme amended

The Australian government has made amendments to the country's renewable energy targets and scheme.

Climate change minister Penny Wong has revealed amendments to the country's renewable energy target and scheme.

Changes have been made to give clean energy investors greater certainty over investment returns, with Ms Wong suggesting the target could be temporarily raised in 2012 and 2013 to absorb a boom in renewable energy certificates generated from solar panels installed on Australian properties.

Such certificates are bought by carbon-producing power generators to help meet the 2020 target of 20 per cent of energy from renewable sources.

The Renewable Remote Power Generation Program was launched in Australia to offer financial support in a bid to increase the use of renewable generation.

It has supported remote Australian properties, communities, organisations and businesses since 2001, with more than 9,000 projects being started.

The 10,600 kilowatts of renewable energy produced are estimated to save more than 24 million litres of diesel a year.
