More support should be provided by the government to those purchasing property in Australia for the first time, the Real Estate Institute of Australia has claimed.

The Real Estate Institute of Australia (REIA) would like to see the Australian government provide more support to those purchasing property in Australia for the first time.

This view formed part of a proposal that the REIA has issued to political parties and independent senators, requesting support for a comprehensive housing policy.

REIA president David Airey said that the areas the institute is looking for action on are the First Home Owners Grant, housing affordability, mandatory disclosure of energy efficiency ratings, the national property taxation framework and the Foreign Investment Review Board Guidelines.

"The REIA welcomes the opportunity to present proposals for inclusion in a specific housing policy which is aimed at contributing to Australia's continuing strong economic development, addressing the supply of housing and improving housing affordability," he added.

In relation to housing affordability, an increasing number of expats may be able to cover the cost of Australian property, as prices have continued to soften in recent months, Smartcompany.com.au reported last week.
