REIA calls for licensing talks

Talks regarding the introduction of new national licensing for real estate agents have been called for by the REIA.

The Real Estate Institute of Australia (REIA) has claimed the exclusion of itself and other bodies in talks for the introduction of new licensing for real estate professionals may lead to a lowering of standards within the profession.

REIA president Pamella Bennett commented: "A series of consultations around the country have so far proven to be disappointing, with our members reporting back that the views of industry have not been taken into account."

Ms Bennett added that the details of the new scheme should be made available to the REIA, as failure to do so could result in serious implications for the profession in the future.

She argued that this lack of collaboration over the initiative highlights how the government is keen to see a pre-determined outcome and is not open to criticism on the subject.

Earlier this month, the REIA gave its backing to the ongoing First Home Owners Grant, claiming the initiative has had a positive impact on the Australian property sector.
