Adjustments are having to be made after the Queensland Health payroll rollout exposed another flaw in all state government pay systems.
The Courier Mail reported that the Industrial Relations Commission heard that the payroll system was deducting overpayments from workers' bank accounts without consent, and this protocol was widespread in other departments.
However, the commission also learnt that the Health Department has been unable to end the problem as it was a "whole-of-government" issue.
"We recognise that these adjustments are being made post-pay and we are working hard to rectify this. We are currently trying to find people manually, which means about 1,000 to 2,000 adjustments per pay cycle," said Mick Reid, director general of Queensland Health.
He went on to say that ultimately, the payroll system needs fixing in order to stop the automatic adjustments.
Guy Haksworth, Queensland Nurses Union secretary, told AAP that he came away from a four-hour long meeting with "no real confidence" about a timescale for the fix.
