A report from the Australian Bureau of Statistics reveals that there were 18,200 public sector job vacancies in the country last month.
This is a percentage change of 0.6 on the number that were available in February and 9.7 percentage points more than in May 2010.
As for private sector job vacancies in Australia, these fell by 1.9 percentage points from February to May.
Last month, some 167,800 private sector job vacancies were advertised, which is an eight percentage point rise on the number available in May of last year.
Overall, with public and private sector vacancies combined, some 186,000 jobs were advertised in Australia in May.
Last month, another report from the Australia Bureau of Statistics revealed that some 63 per cent of the country's temporary residents were in employment last November.
