Australian homes are a step closer to fibre optic broadband following the launch of the first backbone link.
The minister for broadband, communications and the digital economy senator Stephen Conroy visited Mt Isa to launch the first link in the National Broadband Network (NBN).
"Backbone infrastructure provides the communication links that connect our towns, cities and rural areas to each other and the world," he commented.
The fibre optic backbone link will run from Darwin, through central and south-east Queensland to Toowoomba and is part of the government's multimillion-dollar programme.
In total, some 6,000 km of new links will be constructed by Nextgen Networks under the NBN Regional Backbone Blackspot Program.
Once complete, the five links will connect more than 100 regional locations and benefit hundreds of thousands of Australian property residents and businesses.
The agreement with Nextgen Networks was signed at the end of last year and is expected to create more than 1,000 full-time jobs.
