Planning scheme amendment 'will help housing market'

Proposals to alter the planning scheme in Melbourne have been welcomed in the hope they will aid the economy.

Extending Melbourne's Urban Growth Boundary (UGB) through a planning scheme amendment will help boost the Australian property market in the area, it has been said.

The Property Council of Australia welcomed the government's plans, which will redefine the city boundary and set out new parameters for transport and infrastructure initiatives.

Ensuring growth will help Victoria continue to prosper, said Jennifer Cunich, executive director of the state branch of the council.

"The expansion of the UGB will go some way to addressing the undersupply of housing in the state but the government must focus on the urgent need to deal with infill and consolidation of sites in the inner metropolitan ring," she added.

With Victoria expected to grow at a rate of 41 per cent to 2036, the body has urged the government to establish a planning authority to ensure the needs of the population will be met.

Property developers are already focusing on Melbourne, with a boom expected in the city, the Australian reported.
