Figures for Northern Territory housing availability have been unveiled, showing that the government built just four houses in the last two years.

The Northern Territory government has built just four Australian homes in the past two years, according to new figures.

An investigation by the Northern Territory News showed that nearly 200 public housing dwellings were sold or demolished in that period.

In the last four-and-a-half years, Territory Housing properties have decreased by nearly 500, the news provider said, from 5,542 in mid-2005 to 5,058 last month.

Darwin was hit the hardest, losing 316 Australian homes.

The Housing Department pointed out that while only four new Australian homes were built, 109 vacant dwellings were brought back into use following repairs as part of the stimulus package.
