Householders in newer Australian property are more likely to fit the energy efficient features needed to meet government building standards than those in older dwellings, a new report has revealed.
Published by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS), the research shows that, aside from this, newer homes are quite similar to households in older dwellings.
"A greater proportion of households in newer dwellings had solar hot water systems, wall insulation and rainwater tanks plumbed into the dwellings," the report states.
Nearly half of households in newer dwellings said their main reason for installing insulation was to meet building regulations and standards, compared to less than ten per cent of those in older houses.
A little over one-third of households in newer properties said they installed insulation to make their home more comfortable, compared to over half who lived in older dwellings.
Earlier this month, the Real Estate Institute of Australia claimed that the new government needs to boost housing supply in the country order to prevent property prices from increasing to rates that make them unaffordable.
