Infrastructure spending is a major contributor to an areas long term growth, and the planned new shopping centre at Airlie Beach is another major boost for an area already enjoying excellent growth.

Construction on the $54 million Centro Whitsunday Shopping Centre is just weeks away from completion, with officials this week giving Whitsunday Times readers an exclusive glimpse of which retailers will be setting up shop.

Chief operating officer of the Centro Properties Group Graham Terry said work on the centre was well and truly on track, with the doors expected to be open for trading from March 27. “The centre will boast a brand new Big W – the only one in the region, a Woolworths supermarket, Best & Less, an enlarged Mitre 10 store and 45 new retailers,” he said. “On completion at the end of March there will be 38 specialty retailers plus free standing home maker sites containing retailers such as Super Cheap Auto, Beds R Us, Silk Road, Video Ezy and LEW Lighting and Electrical showroom. The new Whitsunday Shire Council Community Library and Service Centre will also be located on the site.”

In addition to a newsagent, pharmacy and bakery, new retailers to open at Centro Whitsunday will include Rivers, Dollars & Sense Discounts, Prouds, Loot, Millers, Rockmans and Ed Harry Menswear.

Local retailers such as Beachworx, Moochas, Whitsunday Bakery, Paluma Cellars, Leading Edge Music and the Telstra Shop will also establish business in the centre.

Centro Whitsunday centre manager George Wade said the shop fit-outs would start next week with Woolworths and Big W already finished and stocking up their shelves. “The Whitsundays will soon have a much large choice of Shopping and product availability,” Mr Wade said, adding the complex would also be open for Sunday trading. “In addition to the increased shopping, Centre Whitsunday has employed numerous people during it construction and when finished, the shops will also be generating many jobs for our region.”

Centro will open its doors to the public on March 27, with the official opening ceremony and dedication to be held on March 31.
