More than quarter of Australian residents born overseas

This time last year, some six million migrants were living in property in Australia.
Around six million migrants were living in property in Australia in June 2010, new figures have revealed.

A report published by the Australia Bureau of Statistics reveals that this means 27 per cent of the country's residents were born overseas.

These migrants are from over 200 different countries across the world, the report shows.

Some 1.2 million of the country's overseas-born residents were born in the UK and 544,000 were born in New Zealand.

"The majority (76 per cent) of overseas-born residents were of working age, 15–64 years at June 2010," the report states.

More of the migrants born in Asia, America and Africa were young (0–14 years) and working age than those from Europe.

Last month, the Australia Bureau of Statistics revealed that two-thirds of recent migrants to Australia were employed in November 2010.

It also showed that recent migrants from English-speaking countries were more likely to be employed than those born in other countries.
