It is crucial for the Australian property market that Tasmania attempts to reform its current planning laws, according to an expert.
Housing Industry Association (HIA) Tasmania director Stuart Clues claimed the state's government consistently failed to deal with the issues facing the construction sector over the last few years, before passing the new Single Residential Planning System in August of last year.
While this move was welcomed by construction industry professionals and private owners alike, Mr Clues claimed that many local councils have been obstructive to the new legislation.
"If the planning reform is left in the hands of council with no competition from the private sector it will continue to be frustrated and move at glacial pace," he added.
The Property Council of Australia recently suggested property investment in New South Wales could be given a major boost through reform to the state's current planning system, with the government's recent Green Paper proposing several salient measures.
