The Housing Industry Association (HIA) has warned that the materials used to build Australian houses need to comply with a quality control test in order to ensure investment in Australian property is encouraged.
With this in mind, it has announced its intention to launch a campaign against non-compliant materials being used in the residential building sector.
This can be a problem if materials are imported from somewhere with less stringent quality control checks and not subjected to any testing before being used in building projects.
HIA managing director Shane Goodwin said the increasing prevalence of off-shore products makes this an especially important issue.
"This can have consequences such as subsequent repair costs, damage to the reputation of the building industry and potentially threats to human health and safety," Mr Goodwin argued.
The HIA has recently urged the government to boost investor sentiment through incentivising residential construction and cutting interest rates.
