An estimated 498,400 people visited Australia on short trips in February, new data has revealed.

Some 498,400 people visited Australia on a short-term basis in February 2011, a new report has shown.

This is in trend terms, but the Australian Bureau of Statistics report also shows that, in seasonally-adjusted terms, the figure was 492,400.

The number of short-term visits to the country in January was 500,500 in trend terms and 503,800 in seasonally-adjusted terms, so there were 0.4 per cent and 2.2 per cent decreases respectively in February.

"Short-term resident departures during February 2011 (612,300 movements) increased 0.4 per cent compared with January 2011 (609,500 movements)," the report goes on to reveal.

It also shows that this current trend estimate for departures from the country is 8.8 per cent higher than it was in February of last year.

Last week, a report from the Australian Bureau of Statistics revealed that the average room occupancy rate for hotels, motels and serviced apartments with 15 or more rooms was 68.8 per cent in the December quarter.

This is an increase of 0.4 percentage points on the rate recorded in the previous three months.
