Govt 'should appt minister to remedy property shortage'

A minister should be appointed to look specifically at increasing the supply of new property in Australia, the Housing Industry Association has claimed.

The government should appoint a minister whose sole responsibility is to address the shortage of property in Australia.

This is according to the Housing Industry Association (HIA), which called on the federal government to re-engage in housing policy reform.

It urged the government to "immediately introduce stimulus measures to boost new housing".

A statement from the HIA said the government should also make sure that, at the October taxation forum, the best ways of decreasing the "exorbitant taxes, charges and fees that are currently levied on housing" are examined.

No new taxes, such as a carbon tax, that have an impact on the cost of new housing should be introduced, the HIA also claimed.

The states should also be assisted in removing stamp duties on new homes.

Last month, the Real Estate Institute of Australia claimed that first-time buyers need to be attracted back to the property market in order for it to flourish again.
