Govt making 'positive steps towards housing reform'

Positive steps are being made by the government towards housing reform, according to the Real Estate Institute of Australia.

The government is making positive steps towards housing reform, the Real Estate Institute of Australia (REIA) has claimed.

David Airey, president of the REIA, welcomed the federal government's release of National Urban Policy - Our Cities, Our Future.

This acknowledges the fact that cities must expand further in order to accommodate Australia's increasing population.

Mr Airey said that it "makes some encouraging moves toward addressing the housing needs of all Australians".

"The government has set a strong agenda for managing population growth," he added.

Mr Airey said that the REIA will help to deliver the proposals to improve infrastructure delivery, transport, jobs and housing.

The National Urban Policy - Our Cities, Our Future scheme has also been welcomed by the Housing Institute of Australia (HIA).

Graham Wolfe, chief executive of the HIA, emphasised that the majority of people living in Australia want to live in its major cities, such as Sydney and Melbourne.
