This represents a 43.4 per cent increase on the number that were commenced in the second quarter of last year.
Some 28,089 new private sector houses started being built in the period, which is 22.2 per cent more than the same three months of 2009.
"The trend estimate for new private sector other residential building commencements rose 11.4 per cent in the June quarter, which follows a rise of 16.4 per cent in the March quarter," the ABS report states.
