Dreaming of a Green Xmas

Xmas comes but once a year, and with the new focus on the environment here are some tips to save some resources and give a gift to the planet as well this Xmas.

While Christmas is a time of celebration and (often) excess, there's no reason our environmental footprint should increase, even though spending and waistlines may.

Here are some tips for a greener Christmas -

- Keep it real this year - when it comes to picking a tree, go for the real thing rather than a plastic one that was made using chemicals and will eventually end up in landfill.  That way when you're done with it, you can recycle it.  Most councils will remove it as part of their recycling service; but if they don't, take it to your local tip and ask them to mulch it for you.
- Wrap it up well - save wrapping paper and trimmings to re-use next year.  This may require the use of less sticking tape and a little extra effort to collect and store, but it seems a pity to waste it.  If you're buying new, avoid metallic `papers'.
- Batteries included?  If you are giving the kids toys that need batteries this year, invest in a solar battery recharger - you save energy and money and they learn a valuable lesson.
- Mood lighting - candles can create a great festive feel, but look for soy, beeswax or natural vegetable-based candles that are biodegradable and smoke-free, rather than paraffin candles made from petroleum.
- LED the way - decorate the tree, house and anywhere else you normally put Christmas lights with LED lights - they will reduce your energy bill, and last up to 80 times longer than electric lights.  Solar lights are even better, and available from many retailers.
