Demand for green property 'is increasing'

More and more people are seeking property in Australia that is environmentally friendly, according to real estate expert John McGrath.

Demand for property in Australia that is energy efficient is increasing, a real estate expert has asserted.

John McGrath, founder and chief executive officer of McGrath Estate Agents, wrote in his latest blog that people used to favour greener properties as they made them feel good that they were doing something to help the environment.

However, now people are starting to benefit financially from opting for green properties in Australia, he added.

"If architects and home builders start upgrading new homes to above the minimum authority requirements … the added investment will start to pay off going forward," Mr McGrath wrote.

He explained that he is not yet able to say just how much energy-efficient features will increase the value of a property by, but that he should be able to over the next 24 months.

Last year, the Housing Institute of Australia gave its GreenSmart Home of the Year Award to Victorian-based Beaumont Concepts and Ecoliv Buildings for its environmentally-friendly Wonthaggi project.
