Degrees 'gaining popularity in Australia'

More Aussies are achieving degrees and post-graduate qualifications.

Higher education and advanced qualifications are becoming more prevalent across the country, figures from the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) have revealed.

ABS director of the National Centre for Education and Training Statistics Andrew Webster said the proportion of the population that holds a Bachelor's degree has risen by 25 per cent between 2001 and 2012.

He commented: "Postgraduate degrees have seen the largest increase, with the numbers almost tripling from 280,000 in 2001 to more than 750,000 in 2012."

Mr Webster added that the news bodes well for the country's future, with an increasing proportion of highly-skilled individuals able to bolster Australia's workforce. Overall, 27 per cent of women and 24 per cent of men now hold degrees.

Earlier this month, the ABS revealed the health of Aussies is also improving, with more than half of the population having visited a dental professional during the last 12 months.
