The Real Estate Institute of Australia (REIA) has welcomed the appointment of a dedicated housing minister to deal with Australian property issues.
Robert McClelland MP was appointed minister for housing and homelessness by prime minister Julia Gillard.
REIA president Pamela Bennett hailed the decision, calling it long overdue. She added that she hoped this move would see housing and property problems given a more prominent role in Australian politics.
"Housing affects the majority of Australians who will be voting in the election; Australians will expect leadership from the government on this issue," said Ms Bennett.
Some of the issues the REIA would like to see discussed are housing affordability, solutions to planning delays and a focus on skill shortages across the industry.
Other construction bodies reacted positively to the news, with the Housing Industry Association calling it a "crucial step" in ensuring the property market will be well regulated and within realistic reach for homebuyers.
