Decrease in Australian homelessness

Homelessness levels have diminished in Australia in recent years.

The level of homelessness being witnessed across Australia has fallen, according to new figures from the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS).

Official data has revealed a six per cent decline in the number of people living without a home across the country between 2001 and 2006. During this period, the rate of homelessness in the population fell from 51 to 45 individuals in every 10,000 persons.

Based on analysed census data, the figures revealed 89,728 people were homeless on August 8th 2006 - six in ten homeless people in Australia were under the age of 35, with 57 per cent of this group being male.

Earlier this month, ABS data highlighted a fall in the amount of retail spending taking place across the country in July.

Department stores saw the greatest falls during the month of 10.2 per cent, while clothing, footwear and personal accessory retailing was down 0.9 per cent.
