The Real Estate Institute of Australia (REIA) has claimed that continued professional development (CPD) should be mandatory for all property professionals in order to maintain the standards of the industry.
REIA president Pamela Bennett stated agents need to be aware of numerous important laws and appropriate legislation for different jurisdictions.
She commented: "Continuing education ensures up-skilling and development of individuals. Abolishing mandatory CPD would leave the consumer at risk."
Ms Bennett added that since Western Australia introduced CPD in 2007 there has been a two-thirds reduction in the number of written complaints regarding the conduct of property professionals in the state, highlighting the importance of ongoing professional development.
Earlier this month, the REIA claimed plans by the Council of Australian Governments' to eliminate CPD for auctioneers would have a similar impact on consumer wellbeing.
Ms Bennett concluded at the time: "Why would the government dumb down the credentials of the person handling the sale of your biggest asset? It's madness."
