Australian property owners in the Sydney region of Edgecliff are the wealthiest in the country with an average income of more than AUS$186,000 (£113,300) a year.
This is more than AUS$20,000 ahead of the second and third richest suburbs - Toorak and Portsea in Victoria.
In 2006-07, Portsea was the wealthiest suburb, with an average income of AUS$219,345, demonstrating the impact of the recession on salaries.
The figures from the Australian Taxation Office for the 2007-08 tax year also revealed taxation rates and showed a gap of AUS$159,000 between earners in the country's richest and poorest areas.
Some 14.8 million tax returns were lodged - an increase of 6.7 per cent on the previous year - with individual filings accounting for the majority of all those lodged.
More people were using electronic taxation forming, with nearly one in five embracing the latest technology in their tax returns.
