A reformation of the council boundaries in New South Wales (NSW) is set to take place in the near future.
At present, there are 44 councils in operation in NSW, but the legislature would like to see the amalgamation of many of these areas into just 12 councils in the future.
NSW deputy executive director Edward Palmisano commented: "Our council boundaries are hopelessly out of date. Compulsory amalgamation is crucial to ensure local government remains relevant for the 21st century and delivers the long-term benefits our community deserves."
It is hoped that the move will result in less bureaucracy, as well as lowering administration costs and increasing purchasing power for those councils which remain. In addition, this will aid in the retention of top talent within the sector.
Earlier this month, the state's new development agency UrbanGrowth outlined its planned for the future of NSW, including a reduction in the quantity of land being sold to developers in competition with the private sector.
