Construction 'still struggling'

The Australian construction sector continues to struggle, a new report has claimed.

Construction efforts in the Australian property sector continue to be hampered by low confidence in a recovery, new data has revealed.

The latest Australian Performance of Construction Index from the Australian Industry Group (AIG) was 2.2 points lower in July than during the previous month at 32.6.

A figure of less than 50 highlights a contraction in the sector and July 2012 marked the 26th straight month that the index was below this score.

However, AIG group director of public policy Peter Burn commented: "Two bright spots in July were an easing in the rate of decline in apartment construction activity and a pick up in the engineering construction new orders sub-index."

He added that the biggest drags on activity are the ongoing slumps in the commercial and housing construction industries.

The news follows the recent Trades Report from the Housing Industry Association, which highlighted a downturn in the number of construction projects taking place across Australia over recent months.
