China 'biggest source of migrants to Australia'

Australia is home to more migrants from China than anywhere else in the world, new figures show.
Australia has welcomed more Chinese migrants than any other country in the world in the past year, the country's minister for immigration and citizenship has said.

According to Reuters, Chris Bowen yesterday (August 10th) revealed that 29,547 Chinese citizens relocated to the island during the 12-month period ending in June.

The figures, which represent the first time the country has taken more than Britain, showed that 17 per cent of total migrants came from China.

Previous comments from the Australian government revealed that they country aims to issue 185,000 migration visas between 2011 and 2012, including 125,850 skilled visas.

"Skilled migrants deliver significant benefits to the Australian economy as their employment contributes to economic growth and their relative youth offsets some of the impacts of the ageing labour force," Mr Bowen explained.

This news comes after Workpermit.com revealed that Western Australia was looking to take on high numbers of skilled migrants to work on resource projects in the region.
