This will ensure the city's housing shortage will only get worse, the Sydney Morning Herald commented.
The statistics from the National Housing Supply Council, commissioned by the federal government, suggest a shortfall of 178,400 properties throughout the country, rising to 308,000 within five years and to 640,600 by 2028.
Figures released by the New South Wales Planning Department have also highlighted the current Australian property situation in and around Sydney, detailing the highest levels of residential development land available since 1981.
State premier Kristina Keneally maintained that the government is exceeding its Australian property targets.
"The NSW government has rezoned land for a record 68,636 lots, of which more than 30,000 lots are ready for development right now," she commented.
Ms Keneally has also hit back at claims that Melbourne will outgrow Sydney, saying the state is not a "global city in decline".
