The Housing Industry Association (HIA) has given its support to new recommendations from the latest inquiry into the Building Services Authority (BSA) that call for major reform.
HIA executive director for Queensland Warwick Temby said that many present functions of the BSA are incompatible and require separation and it is a case of the organisation attempting to be all things to all people, all of the time.
Indeed, powers including licensing, dispute resolution and insurance functions do not sit well together.
"While the committee has made 41 recommendations in total, the first recommendation to structurally separate the functions of the BSA should be the cornerstone of all of the future reform," he commented.
Last month, the HIA highlighted a modest rise in the average value of Australian homes, citing a relatively stable labour market and steadily increasing household incomes as important factors in the improving stability of the property sector.
