State governments have been urged to improve their planning processes for Australia's capital cities.

The Green Building Council of Australia has called for a federal minister for urban affairs to be nominated to sort out the issues, ABC reported.

"There is an inconsistent approach across a number of different criteria," said Romilly Madew, chief executive of the council.

"Cities may have a strong planning regime but then that doesn't support population growth or environmental issues," she added.

A holistic approach is needed in dealing with planning, Ms Madew suggested.

Her comments follow a report from KPMG for the Built Environment Meets Parliament Alliance, which highlight the performance of capital cities as "critical" to the nation's growth.

The Property Council of Australia welcomed this, saying there is a long way to go in order to ensure future challenges can be met.

It urged the government to actively engage in capital city planning.
