There is a "growing social problem in Australia" where the country has "a dire lack of affordable rental property", it has been suggested.
Research from the Housing Industry Association showed that there is shortage of 110,000 dwellings across Australia, with problems most severe in New South Wales, according to Bloomberg Business Week.
Harley Dale, chief economist at Housing Industry Association, told the news provider that the 20,000 new homes the government announced funding for in February last year "only scratches the surface" of what the country needs.
In other recent comments, Mr Dale said that recent ABS figures were confirmation that new residential building work done fell in the December 2009 quarter.
He noted the 2.5 per cent decline in seasonally-adjusted new residential work carried out at the end of last year, revised from an initial 3.9 per cent fall.
"The quarterly decline in new home building activity in December 2009 is a reminder of the importance of ensuring sufficient skilled labour is available to keep the wheels of recovery turning," he added.
