It is believed that these cuts could be made if a plan similar to the city of Sydney trigeneration arrangement is rolled out across the country, the Australian newspaper reports.
Sydney's council is planning to build a network of trigeneration plants, which would produce electricity locally, instead of importing it from the grid.
This would result in savings of more than $200 million (£130 million) by 2020 and upwards of $1 billion by 2030.
"Trigeneration plants have many benefits, especially as the fuel source is natural gas, which is carbon-efficient. Hospital[s], hotels and buildings in constant use will benefit from trigeneration plants," Mirvac Asset Management's sustainable building operations manager Adrian Michaels told the newspaper.
Back in March, John McGrath, founder and chief executive officer of McGrath Estate Agents, wrote in his blog that demand for energy efficient property in Australia was increasing.
