Affordable housing 'core ingredient for population growth management'

The Property Council of Australia has highlighted the need for affordable Australian housing if population growth is to be managed.

The ability to offer affordable Australian housing is a "core ingredient" in managing Queensland's population growth, it has been claimed.

State government initiatives towards coping with increasing residents have been welcomed by the Property Council of Australia, but it says more work is needed.

Further action and continued focus is required, according to Steve Greenwood, executive director of the Queensland office for the Property Council of Australia.

"The government's commitment to nail the infrastructure charges issue once and for all is welcome – however we are awaiting a clear plan of action on this issue," he commented.

Fast-tracking of greenfield developments and the issue of a Queensland Infrastructure Plan should also aid Australian property affordability, Mr Greenwood continued.

"It is also important that we don’t just plan - we deliver," he added.

Mr Greenwood has also warned against placing higher taxes on the Australian property industry, saying this would only stretch the sector further.
