The appointment of Brendan O'Connor as the minister for housing and homelessness has been welcomed by Australians for Affordable Housing (AAH), which called it a positive step in solving some of the problems facing the Australian property market.
AAH campaign manager Sarah Toohey praised the government for deciding to make the position permanent and expressed her hope that this would prove decisive in changing its policy approach to housing.
"We need a national housing plan, to deliver affordable housing, right across the system, from public and community housing to home ownership," argued the campaign manager.
She added that the creation of roughly 100,000 affordable properties is needed to assuage the accommodation problem facing the country, noting that roughly one in ten households are already facing housing stress.
The Housing Industry Association also welcomed the appointment, with Brendan O'Connor praising the new focus on property evinced by this new cabinet reshuffle.
