AAH: This could be year for housing shift in Australia

Australians for Affordable Housing has claimed 2012 could see a sea change in the market.

Lobby group Australians for Affordable Housing (AAH) has claimed 2012 could provide a change in the Australian property market as the government begins to focus on providing the right kind of housing for its growing population.

It has expressed its intention to ramp up its campaign for housing in the new year, with plans to launch a major federal bid in the coming weeks.

"We'll be telling the federal government exactly what needs to happen to make housing more affordable," the lobbyists explained.

AAH also plans to keep campaigning for more affordable rents, better financial support for those on low incomes, fairer housing investment tax arrangements and methods to entice first-time buyers on to the property market.

According to figures from AAH, in the last ten years house prices have increased by 147 per cent, despite income only growing by 57 per cent over the same time period. This has left a swathe of the country in housing stress, the organisation argues.
